About Mary Heraty

Mary uses cognitive-behavioral methods and supportive coaching strategies to help individuals struggling with stress, depression, anxiety, relationship issues, life transitional problems, drug and alcohol difficulties and grief.

Mary continues to challenge herself with new treatment options for her patients and attends training courses regularly. She has completed numerous workshops in marital and family counseling and communication styles between individuals. Adolescence can be a turbulent time for some and Mary has completed courses on a variety of adolescence issues, including peer pressure, attention deficit disorder, and self mutilative behaviors. She has also attended play therapy seminars to improve her communication style with young children who have difficulties with separation issues and expressing themselves appropriately in school.  

Mary has been in private practice for 20 years and has also served McHenry County for the past 23 years as a crisis counselor performing psychiatric evaluations on all age levels in a variety of settings including emergency rooms, police departments and schools. She had provided counsel to individuals and their families during some of their most stressful moments and has been able to help them make better decisions with education and support.

Mary has both inpatient and outpatient behavioral health experiences with children, adolescents and adults. Mary earned her Master of Arts Degree in Counselor Education from Northeastern Illinois University. She is a licensed guidance counselor and a certified teacher in the state of Illinois and promotes and encourages a team approach from all disciplines when counseling adolescents and children. 

Mary has completed the Critical Incident Stress Debriefing program which is designed to help others cope more effectively after being a participant or eyewitness to a traumatic event. She has attended Homeland Security seminars and has networked with first responders in McHenry County area in order to understand the protocol in place for emergency situations. Mary has completed her Certified Alcohol and Drug Certification in 2010.

On a personal level, Mary is a mother of five children and has been involved in the McHenry County community for the past 30 years. She enjoys helping other parents enhance their relationships with their children. Every client is a privilege to meet and Mary's relaxed accepting manner will make you feel at ease.
